October 26 - Last week Seattle Academy added two more banners to their wall, winning the girls' varsity Cross Country and Soccer championships.
On Friday afternoon at Kelsey Creek Park, the SAAS girl’s won the ECL Cross Country team championship with a score of 56 points. It was the third team championship in school history. The girls also won the ECL in 2003 and 2004.
“I’m just so proud of our girls,” said Head Coach Natalie George. “All of them ran amazing. It was truly a team effort. The girls worked so hard and improved so much throughout the year.”
The Cardinals were led by senior Shayla Maupin who ran the 3.1 mile course in 21:14.26 to finish fourth overall. Sophomore Clare Bartell finished sixth with a time of 21:18.81.
“It’s amazing how far our girls' cross country program has come. Last year our team didn’t even place and to win the championship this year is an incredible accomplishment,” said Athletic Director Cathy Schick. “It’s a credit to Natalie and her staff. And I think we have a bright future, nine of our top 12 runners will be returning next year.”
The next meet for the Cardinals is the tri-district championships this Saturday at American Lake. The girls' race will start at 11 AM with the boy’s tri-district race beginning at 12:30.
On Thursday afternoon the girl’s soccer team clinched the ECL title, their fourth straight, after a 0-0 tie at Overlake. Seattle Academy is now 12-0-1 on the season with one game left in the regular season, tomorrow afternoon at Bellevue Christian. The tri-district championships start next week.
