December 14, 2009 - Beginning an endowment for Seattle Academy, and in particular, an endowment to fund financial aid, was the dream of founding Head of School Jean Orvis, who said in 2006:
“I believe Seattle Academy is at risk of losing its socio-economic diversity—an important aspect of
our culture. The percentage of students on financial aid has declined from 20% to 16% since
2001. This endowment will provide another source of revenue and strengthen our ability to bring
multiple perspectives, learning styles and life experiences into the classroom, enriching the
education of all involved.”
Many students have benefited from financial aid at Seattle Academy—in the recent past our ability to respond to increased need has been crucial. And students receiving aid appreciate the school’s faith in them and want to help others. Said 2009 graduate, Sydney Campbell, before leaving SAAS for Scripps College, where she plans to study pre-med:
"I received a great education at SAAS and I feel a responsibility to help other students
understand how to access the opportunities available at Seattle Academy. In particular, going to
Zambia leas summer with SAAS helped me decide on a career. When I returned home and had
time to reflect, I felt different. The children there are so hopeful and positive in spite of the
poverty and neglect. I hope to go back to Africa to help them."
