Development Director

The Director of Development is responsible for developing and implementing the fund-raising strategy and plan for the school.  Reporting to the Director of Institutional Advancement, the Director of Development will be responsible for achieving goals set for major gifts, planned giving, and capital and endowment campaigns, and for working collaboratively with the Annual Fund Director to achieve Annual Fund goals.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a long range fund-raising plan and strategy for Seattle Academy, consistent with the school's Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee the Annual Fund Director in the creation and implementation of annual fund-raising plans, and coordinate fund raising efforts.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with current and prospective major donors, including foundations.
  • Staff the Major Gifts Committee, assisting the Committee Chair in identifying, recruiting, and training volunteer members.
  • Develop and manage Board of Trustees fund raising efforts involving major gifts, planned giving and/or capital and endowment campaigns, including working with the Head of School on those efforts.
  • Oversee and coordinate the production of communications, web based and print, related to fund raising efforts on behalf of the school.
  • Train other staff as needed to support fund raising efforts.
  • Write grant proposals and reports to corporate funders, individuals, and foundations.
  • Manage and oversee the collection of outstanding pledges and intentions to give to the school, including reminders, stewardship activities, and reports, including those required by foundations.
  • Review and approve or disapprove faculty and/or student fund raising efforts.
  • Attend meetings of the Senior Administration team, the Development Committee, and the Board of Trustees.
  • Such other tasks and assignments as the Head of School or the Director of Institutional Advancement may require.

 

Education:  Bachelor's degree or equivalent prior experience; understanding of independent schools and educational institutions.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in successful fund raising, preferably in planned giving, major gifts, and/or capital campaigns.
  • Proven management and leadership capabilities, ideally in a non-profit and/or educational organization.
  • High energy, "can-do" attitude, flexible, team player, attention to detail, highly self-motivated.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work well with Trustees, volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and understand creation of strategic plans and tactics.
  • Ability to prospect, cultivate, steward and manage new and existing donors.
  • Strong event planning skills and experience. Good computer skills and knowledge of data base programs.

 

Compensation:

  • Salary dependent upon experience and qualifications.
